Industrial Action

Teachers and principals of Colyton High School have made the difficult decision to go on strike on Tuesday 7 December. We are experiencing growing teacher shortages and the negative impact it is having on our student outcomes. There are vacancies at Colyton High School, that we have not been able to fill for several years. Uncompetitive salaries and unsustainable workloads are making it harder to keep teachers in the job and have reduced the attractiveness of the profession to high achieving young people. While the work of teachers has become more complex and challenging, their salaries have fallen well behind the average of other professions. Teachers’ workloads are also excessive, particularly the administration and compliance obligations which detract from the time they have for lesson planning and focusing on the needs of individual students. Our teachers are not only educators but fulfill many different roles in the school. We do so with little regard for our wellbeing and safety. The workload that we witness on a daily basis is unsustainable and it is creating burnout in teachers. The last 2 years have been unpredictable and highly stressful, but as educators, our teachers stepped up to meet the challenges and to fulfill their roles. Unfortunately, due to the above outlined issues, it is difficult to retain our teachers and attract the ones we need to stop the shortages. What will happen on Tuesday 7 December? You will need to make alternative plans for your child on this day because many of the teachers will not be at the school. Your child will be able to access the TEAMs Platform and catch up on missed work. They can also access the Learning from Home Hub to continue their learning. We understand this is not ideal. But if we do not act now, teacher shortages will only widen and the disruption in the years ahead will only be greater. The students onsite will be divided into Year Groups and will be supervised by teachers. They will complete assigned work. The structure of the day will be the same. The canteen will not be operational , so students must prepared and bring their recess, lunch and drinks for the day. We hope that you understand our action and support us. This is very important to us and we need to stand strong to bring about improvement to the profession that will benefit the future generations.
